128 CASES OF AEROSINUSITIS OF CHINESE AVIATORS

Abstract
128 aviators with aerosinusitis were admitted to hospital. Conservative medical
treatment was afforded to 51 patients with acute aerosinusitis. Surgical operation was
carried out in 77 patients with recurrent aerosinusitis. Surgical procedures performed
were as follows : external exploration of frontal sinus for 2 cases : middle
turbinectomy(MT) for 3 cases ; MT and submucus resection of septum(SRS) for 3
cases ; MT anterior ethmoidectomy(AE), enlargement of fronto-nasal canal(EFNC) and
removal of polyps for 5 cases 1 MT, AE, and EPNC for 6 cases ; SRS for 8 cases ;
MT, AE, SRS and EFND for 23 cases ; Caldwell-Luc operation for 6 cases ; intranasal
introstomy for 5 cases ; other minor operations for 16 cases. In 128 patients, frontal
sinus and maxillary sinus were involved in 79 per cent and 12 per cent respectively.
The ethmoid sinus was affected in 9 per cent. The prognosis was favourable.123
patients returned to full operational flying duties, 3 to limited flying duties and 2
disqualified.
